Personal training at home in Geneva: complete 2026 guide

"The coach comes to me, I don't even have to leave the building." That's what 70% of my Champel, Cologny, and Eaux-Vives clients said the first time we discussed. In Geneva, home personal training has exploded these past 3 years. Here's why, what it really costs, and how to avoid the traps.

Why home personal training is booming in Geneva

Three main reasons explain the boom of home personal training in the canton.

  • Time has become more precious than money for many Geneva executives. Peak-hour trains to gym, machine waiting, return trip: 1h30 lost for 1h of sport. At home: 0 time lost, just 1h in your apartment.
  • Privacy and discretion are huge factors, especially in neighborhoods like Cologny or Champel. Many of my clients don't want to be seen sweating, badly groomed, or learning movements in public. At home, zero gaze.
  • Work/home hybridization post-2020 normalized the idea that home is where you do everything: work, eat, train. Gym is no longer the only acceptable place to train seriously.

Result: in my 4-year Geneva clientele, 65% choose home format, 25% a home/gym mix, and only 10% do exclusively gym.

Who is home personal training ideal for?

Not all profiles are made for home. Here's when it's the perfect formula and when it's average.

Profiles where home is ideal

  • Busy executives and leaders wanting to maximize time. 1h home coaching replaces 2h of commute + gym.
  • Parents with young children who can't easily leave. While kids play or sleep, you do your session in the living room.
  • Beginners intimidated by gym atmosphere. Home is a safe setting to learn basics without social pressure.
  • Discreet premium profiles (Cologny, Vandoeuvres, Vésenaz). VIP coaching without public exposure. NDA possible if desired.
  • People with injuries or pathologies wanting a controlled environment without external gaze.
  • Post-pregnancy women not yet ready to expose their body in public gym. Home is the ideal setting for rehab and progressive return.

Profiles where home is less suited

  • Heavy competition athletes (weightlifting, powerlifting, bodybuilding competition). Need a gym with pro equipment.
  • People who need gym's energetic atmosphere to motivate. Some feel less "in the mood" at home.
  • Very small housing (studios under 25 m²) where clearing 2 by 2 m is complicated. Possible but uncomfortable.
  • Noisy family or roommates. Session requires minimum focus. If kids run around or roommates are in the room, less effective.

Equipment: what's useful, what's superfluous

One of home coaching's benefits: you don't need to have a gym at home. The coach brings all needed equipment. But if you want to invest to train between sessions, here's the honest list.

Useful equipment (200-300 CHF starter kit)

  • 2 kettlebells: 8 kg for pulling and arm exercises, 12 or 16 kg for legs and deadlifts. 80-120 CHF total.
  • Resistance band set (5 levels): for mobility, muscle activation, some machine replacements. 30-50 CHF.
  • Thick floor mat (at least 1 cm) for core, abs, stretching. 30-50 CHF.
  • Foam roller for self-massage and recovery. 20-30 CHF.
  • TRX straps (optional but excellent value) for advanced bodyweight exercises. 80-150 CHF.

Superfluous equipment (avoid at start)

  • Workout bench: bulky, little use without dumbbells. Skip.
  • Stationary bike or treadmill: 800-2500 CHF for something that ends up as coat rack 80% of cases. Prefer outdoor walking, free and better.
  • Guided weight machines: too bulky, too expensive. If you need them, get a gym membership.
  • High-end adjustable dumbbells: 600-1200 CHF that only serves if you do serious muscle building. For other profiles, kettlebells are enough.

My rule: start with minimum kit (kettlebells, bands, mat), and invest more only if after 6 months of regular practice you feel you need more.

Space: how much do you really need at home?

Common question: "But I have no space at home". In practice it's rarely a real problem. Here are the actual configurations I see at my clients.

  • Absolute minimum: 2 m × 2 m (4 m²). Space for squats, push-ups, core. 90% of exercises pass.
  • Comfortable: 3 m × 3 m (9 m²). Forward lunges, burpees, HIIT comfortable.
  • Ideal: 4 m × 4 m (16 m²). Everything possible, including lateral movements.

Where to find this space? Living room is solution #1 (temporarily move the coffee table). Empty guest room #2. Covered terrace or finished garage #3. Basement with sufficient ceiling height #4.

In Geneva, many of my Champel and Cologny clients have large apartments (100+ m²) or villas where space isn't an issue. But I also have clients in 2.5-room flats in Eaux-Vives where we manage perfectly with cleared living room.

Traps to avoid when choosing a home coach

10 years in the trade, including 4 in Geneva. Here are the 6 classic traps when choosing a home coach.

1. The coach who arrives without equipment

A pro coach arrives with their equipment bag every session: bands, kettlebells, mat, sometimes TRX. If the coach tells you "buy all equipment yourself first", they haven't invested in their trade or fear transporting their things.

2. Hidden travel surcharge

Some coaches charge a home travel surcharge (+15-30 CHF per session) only mentioned after the first session. Clearly ask in advance: "Is there a travel surcharge to my address?" and confirm in writing.

3. The session that lasts 45 minutes instead of 60

Some coaches count 60 minutes "door-to-door": they arrive at 6 PM, leave at 7 PM, but actual session is only 45 minutes (5 min setup, 10 min basic warm-up, 25 min work, 5 min cool-down). Ask net working duration.

4. Coach not insured for home

If the coach injures himself at your home (fall, bad movement), you may be legally responsible if they aren't professionally insured. Ask for liability insurance proof. A serious coach provides it without argument.

5. No initial assessment

If the coach starts directly with "Let's do squats" at first session, without questions about your history, postural assessment, mobility test, they're applying the same program to everyone. First session = assessment. That's why it's free at most serious coaches.

6. The coach without verifiable certification

Ask: Sports Science Bachelor, Swiss federal certification, BPJEPS, BEES, or equivalent. If vague or "online certification", move on. At home, without gym setting, coach training quality matters even more for your safety.

How a SPORTMOTIV home session actually unfolds

To demystify, here's the typical schedule of a home session with me. You know exactly what to expect.

Before the session

  • Night before, I confirm time and ask you to plan a cleared space of 4-9 m².
  • You plan sportswear, towel, water. That's it.

Arrival (5 min)

  • I arrive 5 minutes before the hour with my equipment bag.
  • We say hello, I set up equipment in your cleared space.
  • Quick check: how you feel, sleep, any soreness, energy level. Orients session intensity.

Warm-up (10 min)

  • Targeted joint mobility per day's exercises
  • Stabilizer muscle activation
  • Progressive heart rate rise

Main work (35-40 min)

  • Program follows your current goal (weight loss, strength, prep, etc.)
  • I correct technique in real time, graduate loads, adapt to your day's form
  • No routine repeated weekly: variation per periodization

Cool-down (5-10 min)

  • Targeted stretches on worked muscle groups
  • Active recovery if session was intense
  • Briefing on exercises to do between sessions if relevant

Departure

  • I pack equipment and leave on the dot.
  • If questions between sessions, send me a message. Response within 12h.

Total: exactly 60 net minutes, departure on time. No overrun, no dragging discussion unless you wish it.

Home, gym or outdoor: choosing the right mix

My Geneva clients rarely do 100% home over the long term. The optimal format depends on day, weather, and goal. Here are the combinations that work best.

  • 100% home: for discreet premium profiles (Cologny), moms with young children, or ultra-busy agendas (not a minute to lose commuting).
  • Home + Nonstopgym mix: for strength profiles wanting to alternate light home work and heavy gym loads 1-2 times per month.
  • Home + outdoor mix: for cardio/weight loss profiles wanting variety (strengthening at home + cardio at Quais Gustave-Ador, Parc Bertrand, Plaine de Plainpalais).
  • Home in winter + outdoor in summer: classic seasonal configuration. November to March, all home. April to October, alternate with outdoor sessions.

Home coaching flexibility also means: you're not locked into a format. Per week, we adapt.

Testimonials from my Geneva home clients

To conclude, 3 real experience returns from my Geneva home coaching clients (anonymized for those wishing not to be identified).

Sandra, 38, Champel, mother of 2 young children: "I tried the Nonstopgym Eaux-Vives for 3 months, I never went. With two young children, organizing childcare plus commute plus session was impossible. Since Kael comes home twice a week during the kids' nap, I lost 6 kg in 4 months and held it for 14 months. I'll never stop."

Patrick, 52, Cologny, senior executive: "I wanted to resume sport but zero desire to be seen sweating in public. Home coaching for 18 months. Total discretion, no gaze, structured sessions. I lost 9 kg, regained muscle mass, and sleep better. Home coaching is what allowed me to hold."

Mathieu, 34, Eaux-Vives, expat in finance: "I travel 2 weeks per month for work. Home coaching + online coaching when abroad. Continuity is total. The coach knows my program, adjusts per my travel. Impossible with a classic gym."

Frequently asked questions

How much does a personal trainer at home cost in Geneva?

Generally between 100 and 180 CHF per session. At SPORTMOTIV, home rate is identical to gym rate: 120 CHF single, 100 CHF per session in 10-pack, subscription plans from 60 CHF/session with engagement. No travel surcharge in Geneva centre. First evaluation session free.

Do I need sports equipment at home?

No. The coach brings equipment every session: bands, kettlebells, mat, TRX. For training alone between sessions, a 200-300 CHF starter kit is enough: 2 kettlebells, bands, mat, foam roller.

How much space do you need at home?

2 m × 2 m minimum (4 m²) for 90% of exercises. Ideally 3 m × 3 m (9 m²) for comfort. Cleared living room, empty guest room, terrace or basement work perfectly.

Is home personal training as effective as gym?

For 80% of goals, yes. Weight loss, fitness recovery, toning, moderate muscle gain, cardio prep: all perfectly achievable at home. For really heavy muscle gain, gym remains preferable. Home and Nonstopgym can be combined.

How does a home session unfold?

Coach arrives 5 min before hour with equipment. Setup 5 min. Warm-up 10 min. Main work 35-40 min. Cool-down 5-10 min. Total: 60 net minutes in your premises, departure on time.

Which Geneva areas are covered?

All city and close surroundings, no surcharge: Eaux-Vives, Champel, Cologny, Carouge, Plainpalais, Servette, Pâquis, Acacias, Vieille-Ville, Plan-les-Ouates, Lancy, Onex, Vernier, Meyrin. Moderate surcharge (15 CHF): Versoix, Chêne-Bougeries, Veyrier, Bernex, Confignon.
