Traps to avoid when choosing a home coach
10 years in the trade, including 4 in Geneva. Here are the 6 classic traps when choosing a home coach.
1. The coach who arrives without equipment
A pro coach arrives with their equipment bag every session: bands, kettlebells, mat, sometimes TRX. If the coach tells you "buy all equipment yourself first", they haven't invested in their trade or fear transporting their things.
2. Hidden travel surcharge
Some coaches charge a home travel surcharge (+15-30 CHF per session) only mentioned after the first session. Clearly ask in advance: "Is there a travel surcharge to my address?" and confirm in writing.
3. The session that lasts 45 minutes instead of 60
Some coaches count 60 minutes "door-to-door": they arrive at 6 PM, leave at 7 PM, but actual session is only 45 minutes (5 min setup, 10 min basic warm-up, 25 min work, 5 min cool-down). Ask net working duration.
4. Coach not insured for home
If the coach injures himself at your home (fall, bad movement), you may be legally responsible if they aren't professionally insured. Ask for liability insurance proof. A serious coach provides it without argument.
5. No initial assessment
If the coach starts directly with "Let's do squats" at first session, without questions about your history, postural assessment, mobility test, they're applying the same program to everyone. First session = assessment. That's why it's free at most serious coaches.
6. The coach without verifiable certification
Ask: Sports Science Bachelor, Swiss federal certification, BPJEPS, BEES, or equivalent. If vague or "online certification", move on. At home, without gym setting, coach training quality matters even more for your safety.
