Which foods to favour
Once the timing is set, it's a matter of choosing the right foods. The principle is simple: energy that's quickly available, a little protein, and as little as possible of what slows digestion.
Digestible carbs first
Carbohydrates are the number-one fuel for the effort. Before a session, favour the ones that digest well: banana, oats, wholegrain bread, rice, sweet potato, apple sauce, dried fruit. The closer the session, the more you pick fast sources in small amounts; the further away, the more you can afford a proper plate of starch. That's the basis of a good pre-workout intake.
A little protein, without overdoing it
A moderate source of protein (yoghurt, skyr, egg, some chicken or fish in a meal further out) helps limit muscle breakdown and stabilise energy. There's no need to pile it on right before the effort, though: protein digests slowly, and a large portion too close to the session sits on the stomach. Save the bulk of your protein for the post-workout meal, which is dedicated to recovery.
Limit fat and fibre before the effort
Fat and fibre are excellent for health, but they slow stomach emptying. Right before a session, a very fatty dish or a big plate of raw vegetables and legumes risks sitting on your stomach. It's not that they're bad: it's a matter of timing. Save them for meals further from training, when digestion has time to happen.
